Personal Foundations

The Personal Foundations competency is defined as, “the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to maintain emotional, physical, social, environmental, relational, spiritual, and intellectual wellness” (NASPA & ACPA , 2010, 24). Several of the assignments that I have written for the College Student Personnel program have enabled me to better articulate my personal values and mission. My personal mission statement details my commitment to wellness. For me wellness is defined by a lifestyle that is congruent with my values of social justice an ongoing dedication to maintaining a sense of community. I have actively demonstrated this commitment by allocating resources through time and expense incurred in order to travel and spend time with family and friends. The pictures below catalog the moments that I was able to spend time with friends and family.

My greatest accomplishments in this competency are that I am now able to recognize when I am not achieving wellness. I have grown significantly through developing coping strategies to manage those moments when I do not feel that I am effectively maintaining a sense of holistic wellness. Meditation, regular reflection, and exercise are strategies that I employ in order to achieve wellness. Meditation and reflection are tools that work in tandem to ensure that I am mindful and present. I have invested in cd’s and phone apps that assist me in guided meditation. In addition I have also invested in personal journals and a blog that serves as the medium through which I actively reflect. Exercise is another strategy that I utilize to advance my personal wellness. I am working to incorporate yoga into my routine. Although I have struggled to maintain consistent with this final strategy, I hope to continue to grow in my endeavors to become a holistically well individual. The following photos showcase captured moments of my growth in personal foundations.
